Some causes of thyroid under functioning hypothyroidism are viral illnesses, low iodine diets (rare on a Western diet), and autoimmune attacks. But many times the cause of thyroid exhaustion is not known.

Hypothyroidism Treatment

The treatment of hypothyroidism is to replace what your body is not making with artificial thyroid hormone - thyroxine - as a tablet once a day. Every few months your doctor will measure your thyroid hormone level through a blood test and adjust your dose as required. Generally therapy is life-long.
